🏁💨 SOAP BOX DERBY IS TOMORROW! 💨🏁
Forget the Taylor & Travis engagement—this is the REAL headline of the week.
📍 Where: Main Street, Partington Place (Barter Theater) to Pecan Street
🕘 When: Saturday, check in and time trials begin at 10:00a, official race begins at 12!
🎉 What: Racers flying downhill in homemade soap box cars — guaranteed thrills, cheers, and maybe a few dramatic races!
⚠️ Street Closures: Main Street (from Cummings Street to Pecan Street) will be closed from 8:30am until the conclusion of the Derby. Please plan ahead and use alternate routes.
Bring a chair, grab a snack from local vendors (Sinking Springs Church parking lot), listen to some tunes by Bread Fruit Reggae, and get ready to cheer on the racers—this is small-town fun at its finest!

The Abingdon Fire Department is on scene and managing the incident. The oil is not hazardous.
Please use caution in the area and follow any posted signage or directions.

You relaxed, grilled, and maybe broke a lawn chair over the weekend... now it’s time to toss the evidence.
Bulk trash pickup is Tuesday, September 2 – the day after Labor Day! Set your bulky items out by 6:00 a.m. and we'll make them disappear as quick as summer break! Let's clean up and clear out!

This change may impact the car rider line at E.B. Stanley Middle School, and those wishing to go back through town using Boone Street. Please allow for extra time during school drop-off and pick-up.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we continue to make necessary improvements to our infrastructure.

Please use caution, allow extra travel time, and watch for increased congestion

We have been working closely with Washington County Schools, Abingdon Police Department, Abingdon Fire Department, and Public Works to help ensure traffic flows as smoothly and safely as possible during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times.
Schools impacted: EB Stanley Middle School, Abingdon High School, Washington County Career and Technical Education Center.
Traffic Control Support: To assist with traffic management, additional police and fire personnel will be stationed at several key intersections during these times: Stanley Street and Thompson Drive, Boone Street and Main Street, Tanner Street and Main Street (morning), Tanner Street and Valley Street (afternoon), Pecan Street and Main Street (Public Works to control traffic by the light.)
Important Notes: If you are leaving EB Stanley Middle School, we recommend avoiding a right turn onto Stanley Street, due to increased congestion. For all schools, arriving earlier than usual will help ease traffic and reduce stress. Please exercise patience and caution as every adjusts to the changes.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we navigate these necessary improvements to infrastructure. With your help, we're confident we can ensure a safe and efficient start to the school year for all students. For additional information, please see the attached morning and after traffic control maps.
