Our Public Works crews are out pre-treating roads today in anticipation of incoming winter weather. They’re applying brine, a liquid salt mixture that helps keep snow and ice from sticking to the pavement.
What is brine?
Brine is simply salt dissolved in water. When sprayed on dry roads before a storm, it creates a thin protective layer.
How does it work? When snow or freezing rain hits the road, the brine lowers the freezing point of water, prevents ice from bonding to the pavement, makes plowing more effective, and helps roads clear faster once the storm starts. This proactive step improves safety and helps crews keep roads in better condition during winter weather events.
Please give our crews room to work! Stay back from the brine and salt trucks. Remember, even treated roads can still be slick as conditions change — slow down and use caution.
We’ll continue monitoring the forecast and adjusting our response as needed. Stay safe and stay warm!

ATMOS Gas will be replacing the main gas line across Main Street at Deadmore Street. Work is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, and is expected to be completed by 6:00am on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. The road will remain open during this time, however delays should be expected. Please use caution when traveling through the area and follow any posted signage or flaggers.

Due to a water line break, Oak Hill Street will be closed from Valley Street to Stonewall Heights as repairs are made.
The corner of Remsburg and Wall Street (at Mamma Mia's) will be closed from 10:30 - 2:30, as crews will be pumping concrete to create the new curb at the Train Station. Please use an alternate route to access Remsburg Drive.
Please use caution when traveling in both of these areas and follow directions of any posted signage or flaggers. We appreciate your understanding and patience.

🌳 Virginia Creeper Trail Tree Work (Abingdon–Damascus Section) 🌳
Over the winter months, crews will be removing select trees along the section of the Virginia Creeper Trail between Abingdon and Damascus. Many of these trees are ash trees that have died due to the emerald ash borer and now pose a safety hazard to trail users.
The trail will remain open as tree work is completed. Please use caution, stay alert, and follow any posted signage or directions from crews while you’re on the trail.
Thank you for your patience as we work to keep the Virginia Creeper Trail safe and enjoyable for everyone.

We will open with regular business hours tomorrow, Friday, January 2, 2026.

Wishing everyone a safe and joyful evening as you ring in 2026!
