This is a friendly reminder that the first half of 2026 Real Estate Taxes are due on or before Wednesday, May 20, 2026, in accordance with Abingdon, Virginia Code of Ordinances §66-1(2).
Please note that the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) changed its postmark procedures effective December 24, 2025. Mail is now postmarked when it enters automated processing rather than when it is placed in a mailbox. Because of this change, mailed payments placed in collection boxes may receive a later postmark date and could be considered late, resulting in penalties.
To ensure same-day proof of mailing, USPS recommends:
• Visiting a USPS counter and requesting a manual postmark
• Using Certified Mail or Registered Mail
Payments may also be made:
• In person at Town Hall, 133 West Main Street
• Using the drop box located outside the Main Street entrance
While the Treasurer makes every effort to ensure you receive your real estate tax bill(s), Code of Virginia §58.1-3911 states that property owners are responsible for timely payment, including any penalties or interest, even if a bill is not received.
If you did not receive your bill or believe it may have been misdirected, please contact the Treasurer’s Office immediately at (276) 525-1464.
