The Abingdon Police Department recently partnered with the Southwest Virginia Medical Reserve Corps for the National Drug Take Back event at Food City. Thanks to our community’s participation, we collected and safely turned over more than 30 pounds of unused or expired medications 💊 for proper disposal by the DEA.
If you or someone you know needs to safely dispose of medications, visit takethemback.org to find a drop-off location near you 📍. Together, we’re helping keep our community healthier and safer.

Celebrating Leadership Excellence!
The Abingdon Police Department is proud to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of our two lieutenants, Lt. Jennings and Lt. Riley!
Last week, both officers successfully completed the FBI Command Leadership Institute (CLI) - a distinguished program through the FBI-Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA). This intensive course equips law enforcement leaders with the tools and strategies to meet the challenges of command-level leadership.
We are especially proud to announce that Lt. Jennings has completed the entire FBI-LEEDA Trilogy, finishing all three leadership courses - a tremendous achievement and commitment to professional excellence!
Please join us in congratulating Lt. Jennings and Lt. Riley on their hard work and dedication. Their continued growth strengthens our department and the community we serve.

The Town of Abingdon Trick-or-Treat event will take place on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 4:00pm to 6:30pm along Main Street. Drivers should expect heavy pedestrian traffic and possible delays in the downtown area during this time.
To ensure a safe evening for everyone:
🚸Stay alert - Watch closely for families crossing the street
🚗Reduce your speed - Slow down, especially in the area of the event
🚫Avoid distractions - Stay off your phone and keep your eyes on the road
🚦Follow officer direction - Officers will be present to assist with traffic control and pedestrian crossings
💡Use headlights early - Increase visibility for trick-or-treaters and other drivers
We encourage parents and guardians to talk to children about using crosswalks, walking on sidewalks, and making eye contact with drivers before crossing, prior to attending this event.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work together to keep Abingdon's families and visitors safe this Halloween season! Safety is everyone's responsibility!
